What a Build-Your-Own Case Actually Is
The objection to buying a case is rarely the money. It is committing twelve jars to one flavour. A build-your-own case removes the bet without making the case smaller.
The usual objection to buying a case is not the money. It is the commitment. Twelve jars of one flavour is a bet on your own future preferences, and most people have been wrong about that at least once.
A build-your-own case removes the bet. You take the case, but you choose what goes in it.
How it works
A case has a fixed number of slots. You fill them from that brand's range, in whatever combination you like, and it ships as one case at one case price. Three different flavours, or three of the same if you already know what you want. The box, the weight and the shipping are identical either way, because it is the same case.
There are 48 of these on MasterCase at the time of writing, and the slot count varies a lot by what is in them:
| Slots to fill | Example | What a slot is |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Protein Candy | a 12-bag pack |
| 3 | Protein Munchables | a 12-cookie pack |
| 6 | Kaslo Sourdough | a 2 kg bag of pasta |
| 8 | Joe Schmo Coffee | a 454 g bag |
| 12 | Rad Jamz | a 250 mL jar |
| 24 | Enercheez | a single 60 to 70 g pack |
The slot is always the unit the maker actually packs, which is why the counts look uneven. Enercheez ships a case of twenty-four small packs, so there are twenty-four choices to make. Protein Candy ships two packs of twelve, so there are two. Nobody picked those numbers for the website; they come off the carton.
Two of them are ladders rather than fixed cases
Flying Leaf Tea runs at 10, 15 or 20 bags and Xero Tabs at 2, 4 or 6 tubes, so you choose the size of the case as well as its contents. That is the exception rather than the pattern, and it exists because both products are light enough that a bigger case does not change the shipping much.
Weight is usually what stops a case getting bigger. A twelve-slot case of 250 mL jars is already heavier than a twenty-four-slot case of cheese snacks.
Where it genuinely helps
Anything you drink. Coffee and tea are the obvious case. Most people want variety across a month rather than twelve identical bags, and a builder is the only way to get a case price without committing to one roast.
Households with different tastes in them. Two adults and two children rarely want the same flavour of anything.
Trying a brand properly. One jar tells you whether you like one jar. A mixed case tells you whether the brand is worth reordering, which is a different and more useful question.
Anything seasonal. Three of the thing you want now and one of the thing you will want in February.
Where it does not
If you only ever buy one flavour, a builder adds a decision and nothing else. Several brands sell straight single-flavour cases for exactly that reason, and picking the same item into every slot gets you to the same place with more clicks.
And a mixed case does not make a case smaller. The commitment question from earlier still stands: the honest test before any case purchase is how long it will take you to finish it. Mixing the contents makes that easier to answer, not irrelevant.
One practical note
The case price is the case price regardless of how you fill it. There is no surcharge for mixing and no discount for taking all of one thing, because the carrier charges for the carton rather than its contents. If a brand's case holds eight slots, taking eight of one thing costs exactly what spreading those eight across four flavours costs.
Counts and examples as at 1 October 2026. Which builders exist and how many slots each has changes as brands come on, so treat the table as illustrative rather than a catalogue.
Where to find them
The 48 builders run right across the catalogue, so the best way in is by department: Coffee, Tea & Beverages, Food & Beverage, Pet and Beauty & Personal Care all have them.
A builder is easy to spot. The title says so, for example Rad Jamz, Build Your Case (12 × 250 mL). $35 of shipping is already inside every case price, and mixing the contents does not change it.
